The Journey to Recognition

When attempting to work on this project, I became interested in documentation, and the idea of mapping the things we do. I started questioning the concept of ‘work’ and how a ‘piece of work’ exists, or existed. It also poses questions of what work is, and how it can be defined or quantified.

I started looking at my previous work, and became interested in the fact that my sketchbooks talk a lot about recognition and attention, I saw that they always seemed to be seeking out and craving recognition. I also noted that I had objectified recognition as being at the Design Museum some months ago. These things I feel embarrassed about now, i would hope that I was not taking myself too seriously.

The process was to walk to the Design Museum, or ‘recognition’, from where I currently live; New Cross, which I labeled as ‘mediocrity’. I would heavily document my journey, which would prove I had embarked upon it, and would be proof of my thinking and contemplation, or work.

The walk became little more than a thinking period, where I noted and commented on what was happening around me. Nonetheless, the process of that walk became a piece of ‘work’, which itself questioned the notion of ‘work’. Was a couple of hours walking really ‘work’? What was it classified as if it was just an excercise in thinking?
