This is some footage I made with Jamie when we were in Spain- we sat around talking about art, design, cars, bikes etc for a couple of hours, I filmed a lot, and it has been a huge pain to edit, hence why I haven’t made a film for (over) two weeks.
“Design can change the world” - I think this is a stupid and unthoughtful expression. Of course design can change the world; it continually does, and always has done. When we look at the seemingly insignificant things we design- adverts, branding, new juice squeezers, we can see that they have a small pinprick pushing us towards something. All building up into a massive change- The iphone changed the world (the way we experience cities, our social life etc), but its just a phone! The problem here is not that design doesn’t make change it is that we continually design, and change the world for the worse – in a way that a certain group of people visualise the future.
I think a better phrase would be “Design continually changes the world- so make sure it’s good.”
-I found this little rant in a ‘sticky note’ somewhere in the depths of my HDD- I’m not sure when I wrote it but it seemed to make sense next to the poster.
On and off I have ben working on the Innopia website- there are still teething problems and glitches, but would be good to get some feedback. It’s built on wordpress, theme by me.
These films were made by Ben Barker who is in the third year at Goldsmiths; he has been making them (I think) as part of the film workshop in the final year, and I love them.
My favorite so far was shot in Deptford; the editing talks of the subject matter and starts to give more meaning to the interview process; styling the content to have more impact perhaps:
In terms of content however, my favorite is from Greenwich:
This final year looks really exciting to me, the structure has been completely changed and the studio seems to be a factory of consistently good stuff. And they are all talking, drinking beers, and making stuff- i’m jealous. I can’t wait to see where these films are going and to see everybody’s show at the end of the year.
I have been working at Kin Design for the last month and a half. Having a great time, working with lovely people, and learning a whole lot. I will be here until December, when the current project ends; making an exhibition stand and set of films for the University of the Arts London. We have been shooting a series of stop frame films in order to show the art schools from the inside, pouncing on students and asking them to be in it; doing whatever it was they were doing when we found them.
It’s been lovely, partly to gain insight into the other London art schools, to be nosy and see what they have, and what is good about them individually… I miss college!
We have shot around 20,000 images in total, just some of them are printed off here (one still from each scene) and assembled into story boards; a great way of working, print stuff out and get it on the wall, not something I have done enough of in the past. Editing film purely on screen isn’t easy, and I think as a process this works so well. It costs a bit of money in ink, and you end up with potentially some waste, but it’s totally worth it in aiding process and decision making.
Blogged a million times but still an incredible project – changing behavior for the better with interventions in everyday objects and systems.
It feels like it might have been borrowed from a first year Goldsmiths project, but they’re executed and documented, not just drawings or half made models, real working things, doing stuff in the real world. Anyone want to collaborate on an entry??
I’m posting this partly for Luke, but also to celebrate how lovely these photos are, I think there is place for a collaboration here…
Lizzy has been taking pictures in Allotments, and now in Calais… both sets are lovely, and I think are super interesting starting points for a years work.
So my mornings now consist of a 7am alarm, start work at 7:30 on a building site, until 1pm and then I am free to do whatever I like until I am too tired to move, normally at around 11pm.
I have been keeping myself sane by building a wee workshop in my folks garage, and entertaining myself making bits and pieces out of wood (for bikes). I sold the first pair of ‘Eastfenders’ to Tony at the weekend, so I am officially making for sale now!
Handlebars!
CV’s are out and about, as are a couple of other applications (crossed fingers)
I also went to see some of the shows that are part of LDF 09 at the weekend. Generally had a lovely time but was pretty disappointed with the festival as I think I tend to be anyway. I went to see YCN which had a lovely piece: the luxury skimming stones, I liked the events they talk of; I would love to know when/if they are used, and why, would you just pop them out at any time or would there need to be a celebration, or special occasion, where are the rituals. Something he doesn’t explore, but maybe thats more interesting, though some speculative/suggested contexts would be nice to see.
We also went to see the Goldsmiths MA show, I was generally pretty upset by it, I thought there was some really sub-standard work. I wont dwell on bad stuff because Stephan saved the day, with his Urinal bin, and accompanying film, which are both lovely.
I’m hoping to get back at the weekend as I really haven’t seen enough, it’s making me sick that I’m not doing anything this year when shoveling sand and shifting bricks, roll on next year.
